BTT vs FTT: What’s the Difference in Singapore?

If you’re just starting your driving journey in Singapore, the alphabet soup of BTT, FTT, and RTT can be confusing. Here’s the short version: BTT and FTT are both mandatory theory tests for a car licence, they share the same basic format, but they test very different things and mixing up what to study for each is one of the most common reasons learners get caught off guard.

What the BTT Actually Tests

The BTT is your entry point it confirms you understand the fundamentals before you’re allowed anywhere near practical lessons. Expect questions on:

  • Road signs (warning, regulatory, and informatory categories)
  • Basic traffic rules and right-of-way
  • Speed limits and road markings
  • General road safety and courtesy

Think of it as making sure you know the rules of the road in principle, before you’re tested on applying sound judgement to them.

What the FTT Actually Tests

The FTT builds directly on BTT knowledge but shifts toward judgement and real-world application. Expect a heavier weighting toward:

  • Expressway driving : lane discipline, merging, exit planning
  • Hazard perception : spotting developing risks in a described scenario before they become a problem
  • Vehicle control and competency : clutch control, centrifugal force, braking dynamics
  • Defensive driving scenarios : situations with more than one “reasonable sounding” answer, where you need to pick the safest one, not just a technically legal one

This is why FTT questions tend to feel trickier even to learners who scored well on the BTT the format is identical, but the reasoning required is a step up.

Same Format, Different Difficulty

Both tests share an identical structure: 50 questions, 50 minutes, 90% pass mark. That similarity is exactly what catches some learners out they assume that because the format is familiar, the content will feel just as familiar. In practice, FTT questions are written to test judgement under slightly ambiguous conditions, so surface-level memorisation that got you through the BTT often isn’t enough on its own for the FTT.

You Can’t Skip Ahead

The BTT must be passed before you’re eligible to register for the FTT there’s no way to attempt them out of order. The upside is that your BTT pass never expires, so there’s no time pressure to rush into the FTT the moment you clear the BTT. Take the time you need to prepare properly.

The Validity Difference Matters More Than It Seems

This is the detail that trips up learners who study far ahead of their actual driving lessons: your BTT pass lasts a lifetime, but your FTT pass only lasts 2 years. Once you pass the FTT, the clock is running you need to complete your practical lessons and pass your practical driving test within that window, or the FTT expires and you’ll need to retake it (your BTT stays valid regardless). If you’re not ready to commit to consistent practical lessons soon, it may be worth timing your FTT attempt accordingly rather than passing it the moment you feel ready.

Which One Do You Need?

  • Going for a Class 2B motorcycle licence? You only need the BTT motorcyclists take the Riding Theory Test (RTT) instead of the FTT.
  • Going for a Class 3 or 3A car licence? You need both BTT first, then FTT.

Prepare for Each on Its Own Terms

Because the two tests test different kinds of thinking, the most effective prep treats them differently: BTT study rewards memorising rules and signs, while FTT study rewards practising scenario-based reasoning under time pressure. The Basic Theory Test SG app separates BTT and FTT practice into their own structured question sets, so you’re training the right skill for the test you’re actually about to take.
